The Reflexology Manual by Pauline Wills is an ancient therapy used in China, Egypt, and India, reflexology provides effective, holistic treatment for both common and more serious disorders. According to reflexology, the hands and feet are microcosms of the body, containing points or zones that relate to individual glands, nerves, muscles, and organs.
harnesses the body's healing energy by stimulating specific pressure points on the hands and feet, alleviating the energy blocks that can cause pain or disability and restoring optimum health.

A reflexologist will get to the root of your problems by applying pressure to certain areas on the feet and hands that then stimulate the corresponding organs. The tender areas on the feet are often an indication of where you have toxins stored that need to be released.

Reflexology can help with some of the following ailments:

  • Migraines
  • Digestive problems
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Sports injuries
  • Stress-related conditions
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Allergies
  • Asthma

Thought to have originated in ancient Egypt, it was the early 1900s that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced “zone therapy” to the western modern world after he noted that areas on the hands and feet reflected organs of the body. In the 1930s Eunice Ingham further developed this theory into what is now known as reflexology. A typical appointment will involve the reflexologist assessing the feet and then stimulating various points to identify areas of tenderness or tension.

This treatment is available to everyone, although it is suggested that pregnant women as well as people suffering from blood clots, among other things, should first consult their doctor before talking to a reflexologist. Regular sessions will last between 45 minutes and an hour, although the first consultation can last anywhere up to an hour and a half.

The body and feet are often divided into three areas to make it easier to find reflex areas. Here are a few examples of the “reflex” areas on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body:

  • The tips of the toes reflect the head
  • The heart and chest are around the balls of the feet
  • The liver, pancreas and kidney are in the arches of the feet
  • Lower back and intestines are towards the heels

The hands and feet need to be cared for, as certain ailments might affect treatment. Ill-fitting or worn-out shoes have an adverse effect on the feet and it is suggested that you walk around barefoot as much as possible as it stimulates the reflex areas which in turn will stimulate the energy flow through the body.
